HOME-COMPOSTABLE
PACKAGING FROM
THE SEA
ABOUT US
SEAWEED FOAM is the newly established Lithuanian start-up which uses the special seaweed processing method and creates a bio-foam material that can be used for a new type of home-compostable packaging products
Our founder and researcher Austeja Platukyte is a Ph.D. student of design and an entrepreneur at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. She is a pioneer of material design and Zero Waste philosophy in Lithuania, and an initiator of the first sustainable materials collection in the country, called Biomaterials Library
THE SEAWEED
Seaweeds are a group of algae, found in seawater, and come in green, red and brown species. Over 90 percent of commercialised seaweed today is marine farmed mostly in Asia. Seaweeds are the world’s fastest growing plant – growing 30-60 times faster than land-based plants and soaking up to 5 times more CO2.
The worldwide commercial seaweed market is estimated to grow from US$10.6 billion in 2016 to between $26 billion by 2025. Currently, seaweed has been developed for a myriad of sectors including food, food additives, soil bio-stimulant fertiliser, industry gels, pharmaceuticals, textiles, cosmetics, and paper products. Now we introduce you to a new type of bio-foam packaging material, created by SEAWEED FOAM
CREATED TO BECOME INVISIBLE
Our bio-foam packaging solutions are made only from seaweed & water, so after the product is consumed, the material can simply be home-composted or used as a fertiliser. Even if the packaging would be discarded as waste, due to natural processes and micro-organisms it would again become a part of nature, and would cause no harm to the environment or other forms of life at all
